Metropolis will attempt to bring back a Guinness World Record this year on June 9th. During the 35th Superman Celebration, organizers will once again encourage Superman fans from all over to meet at the Superman Statue to break the record for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Superman. The Guinness World Record was set by 122 people in 2008 during the 30th Superman Celebration. In August 2010, Goodman Masson, UK’s largest independent financial recruitment company broke the record with 180 people. The title changed hands again when a group of 437 employees with Nexen Inc. located in Calgary Alberta of Canada broke the record for the second time since being set by the Metropolis group.
With Superman standing for Truth, Justice, and the American Way, organizers of the popular festival want to bring the Guinness World Record for The Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Superman back to the United States and more importantly to Metropolis Home of Superman!
Men, Women & Children of all ages are invited to participate in the attempt to be held on Sunday, June 9 around the Superman Statue at Superman Square located in Metropolis Illinois. The attempt will take place at 3:00 and according to the requirements for a Guinness World Record, participants must stand in place for 10 minutes. The attempt must be documented with a roster, photos, video & witnesses in order to be confirmed as a successful record. Participants must be in a full licensed Superman costume. Check-in will start at 12:00pm. (Fan-made costumes that fulfill the required elements are considered acceptable. See the note below.)
Each participant will receive a certificate of participation and awards will be given to the largest group or organization to participate, the oldest participant, the youngest participant, the largest family represented and the participant that traveled the furthest.
PLEASE NOTE: The costume requirements for participating in this event are as follows:
Any costume must have the blue body suit, the red and yellow "S" shield on the chest, the yellow belt, the red cape, red boots, and the red trunks. Guinness has given us no indication that other costume variations set forth in the comics, films, or books other than the Classic Superman version or the "Superman Returns" version are considered acceptable, so- to be safe- we are limiting it to these two costume styles only. The Rubies-brand Classic Superman and Superman Returns costumes are considered acceptable as they are officially licensed. Fan-made costumes are acceptable as long as they meet the criteria listed above.
To speed up the process of signing up and signing in for this event, and to help us organize it more efficiently, we've created an online sign-up form. Click here to register now!

As you all know, celebrity autograph sessions are a tradition at Superman Celebration, giving attendees the chance to meet their favorite Superman and superhero-related actors and actresses. While Celebration has grown in attendance over the years, unfortunately the brief time period our celebrities have for these autograph sessions has not. While we try our best to see that as many fans as possible get through the autograph lines, the demand- and the crowds- have grown to the point where it is impossible for everyone in line to be accommodated.
To help alleviate this problem, we have implemented a multi-session ticketing system, as well as a limitation on what items celebrities will sign for free and the number of free items they'll sign. Tickets for the autograph sessions will be distributed as follows:
- Tickets will be required to gain entry into the autograph sessions. You must have the appropriate ticket for the session time in order to be admitted. Children under five do not require tickets for entry. However, they must have a ticket to obtain an autograph.
- One-Half (1/2) of the tickets for the four sessions will be made available at the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce (607 Market Street) on Friday morning, June 7th, 2013 at 7:00 AM.
- The second half of the tickets for the four sessions will be made available at the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce (607 Market Street) on Saturday morning, June 8th, 2013 at 7:00 AM.
- These tickets are free, and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Attendees may be required to wait in line for tickets, and no guarantees can be made that everyone in line will get tickets.
- There is a limit of ONE (1) ticket per person, and a limit of one session per person.
- Session choice is at the sole discretion of the Chamber of Commerce.
- Tickets cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.
- The Celebrities will sign either the Metropolis Planet Special Edition, Superman Celebration Program Book, or Celebration Poster at no charge with a limit of one free autograph per fan. Fans may bring in collectible items or clothing of their own to be signed by the celebrities for a fee per item/per celebrity. 8x10 photos will also be available for purchase at the autograph sessions. (Amount of fee to be announced at a later time.) At this time there is no limit on the number of items you can bring to pay to have signed. However, we reserve the right to impose a limit at any time in order to keep the sessions moving smoothly and accommodate everyone in line.
